Yes, I have been quite MIA for the past month or so, but I'm happy to be feeling oodles better! We find out what the baby is next week, so yay! And yes, I am verifiably INSANE for going to the SCBWI LA conference 4 months prego, but I did it! It was such a great time, guys!
We got to hear from so many AMAZING speakers!! Arthur Levine (who edited the Harry Potter books) gave a great speech on Timelessness. He said one thing that made HP as well as books like The Golden Compass (which I've never read) great is they strike people's humanity, their vulnerability, and give insight into the human condition.
Toni DiTerlizzi was HILARIOUS! He talked about the importance of imagination.
Jay Asher (who wrote Thirteen Reasons Why) gave a great breakout session on Suspense.
And Deborah Halverson's breakout session on dialogue was also excellent!
Even though the speakers and sessions made the trip totally worthwhile, the best part was connecting with friends I usually only get to interact with online!
Elizabeth Briggs (CP extraordinaire), me (in the crazy green wig for the hippie hop party), Rachel Searles (total sweetheart), and Morgan Shamy (my partner in crime, as she put it, lol). Morg and I traveled down together, and it was such a blast! She helped keep me loaded up with chocolate. ;)
Also got to hang out with the adorable Karen Akins, and meet Jessica Love, Jolene Perry, Wendy Higgins, and Nyrae Dawn. And it was such a blast to have lunch and chat with my CP and awesome pal, Anne Pfeffer. Anne, why didn't we get a pic together?!!
Morgan took all the other great pictures (not sure why I didn't!) so check out her blog! But we also hung around a lot with Ryan Dalton, who is super cool!
Anywho, can't wait to get writing and start implementing what I learned! It was such a blast, I hope to do it next year too!!
